| Americans are seeking alternative health therapies in record numbers. In 1998, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 42.1 million Americans spent $21.2 billion dollars a year on alternative therapies including chiropractic care, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and nutritional counseling.
Leading medical schools such as Harvard, UCLA, Yale, and Georgetown offer courses in various alternative therapies.
About 13 percent of U.S. hospitals provide alternative therapies, according to a survey of about 1,000 hospitals by the consulting firm Deloitte & Touche. The figure rises to 25 percent for inner city hospitals and 32 percent for hospitals with at least 500 beds.
